Those sugar cravings are due to your sugar gremlin

The sugar gremlin is real We need to keep our body fuelled up now both fat and carbohydrate can be used as a fuel
source for the body as a whole But since the brain is primarily made up of fat Mother Nature opted to limit the kind of fuel
the brain could run on to carbohydrate It was probably a pretty smart move forcing the brain to use sugar as its primary source einsures that the brain doesn’t accidently
eat itself something which could easily happen when fuel supplies are low because the brain is a huge amount
resources to fire up as a consequence of the fuel rule the brain needs a steady supply of sugar to function at its best So the body comes with a very
sophisticated monitoring system which keeps tabs on the sugar levels
in the blood If the sugar levels start to drop the whole system fires up because it poses a potential crisis for your brain how does the system fire up well you get the I am hungry and I am starving signals really really hungry you feel flat as a pancake your get up and go has got up and left you can be moody and aggressive snapping at friends and foe alike and the final cherry on the top you’re hungry for nice things you crave sugar now to really understand what’s going on we need to pop inside of the brain to an
area of the brain known as the arcuate nucleus or the ARC for short this is the area of the brain that is
responsible for monitoring the energy levels within the whole body like any control room input is received from a variety of
sources so the control room primarily monitors
your bodies sugar levels and fat levels it also keeps tabs on your temperature and exactly what is going on inside of the gut but besides those key variables it also keeps tabs and gets input from other areas of the brain as well as the
body so one of the areas that it gets
information from is from the master clock and this is a litte area of your brain that keeps tabs on time it gets input from the nuclear accumbens the nucelar accumbens is almost like your theme park it’s your reward centre which makes life worth living it gets information from your senses what your eyes see what your taste buds experience what you smell it also gathers information from your play books these are your habits and your patterns of behaviour that you’ve programmed in over the
years finally it also gets information about levels of a variety of other chemicals so for exampleyour sex hormones provide input here your stress hormone as well as various other neurotransmitters now two sets of neurons are actually in
charge of this control room they can be overridden by will power but if you’re not thinking these are the guys that are controlling
the show the first player is the hunger neuron when the hunger neuron reads signals that suggest you are low on energy if fires up your appetite the other player is is the satiety neuron this is just a fancy word for saying the nerves that tell you you are full sometimes also referred to as the appetite suppressor so when the energy levels drop the hunger neuron responds to the
energy crisis by making your hungry and one of the tools that it uses to get
you to hunt for food is it releases hormone in your stomach called ghrelin this hunger hormone causes your stomach to have all those unsettling empty feelings and provokes you to look for food now because the quickest way to boost energy levels is to eat carbohydrate ghrelin makes you hungry for nice things and nice things are typically full of sugar so chocolate cookies sweets anything that has sugar in because this is what you brain needs your brain needs sugar maybe some of you are thinking no that
doesn’t happen to me I’m not really fond of sweet things remember nice things and not just sweet things they’re also starchy things if we could look inside of a piece of bread we’d find it is actually made up thousands and thousands of sugar molecules so if you’re not fond of sweet things your sugar gremlin could be going after foods with hidden sugars such as bread pasta and potato chips so that sugar gremlin is real i’m pretty sure you’d like to tame yours it is really hard to tame something that you don’t understand so in order to get of this little guy you need to know how he works how he thinks his modus operandi the first thing to know is sugar gremlins genuinely just want to have fun join me in next video as we figure out what drives these fun loving gremlins
