Hand Hygiene | San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation Hospital

Hello, my name is Lito Maninding, Infection Preventionist at
San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation Hospital. Today I’ll be talking about hand hygiene. Flu season is well underway and germs can
be spread from object to object very simply. We want to prevent the spread of infection
by doing hand hygiene. Now, germs can be found on many objects. They can be found on your shopping carts
when you go shopping, elevators, buttons, door handles, also any stairwells, and even your phones can harbor harmful germs. You want to make sure that you use soap and water
or hand sanitizers. So with the use of soap and water, you want to make sure you use it
when your hands are visibly soiled or dirty. You want to wet your hands with clean water, want to get your soap, lather it up, and you wanna scrub for at least 20 seconds. After you scrub for 20 seconds,
you want to make sure you rinse, dry, and clean with a nice paper towel. With the hand sanitizers, you want to make
sure you use something with at least 60% alcohol. You want to use one pump or anything that’s
recommended by the manufacturer, and rub it like you would with soap and water. So, the real reason to do it is to make sure
you get your palms of your hands, in between your fingers, back of your hands, also your thumbs, and then you can do your nails, as well. Once you do that you rub it until it’s perfectly dry, this way you have clean hands. Just remember, life is better with clean hands. Thank you.
