Barton Health Peek: Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness

Hello my name is Terri and I’m here
today with the Barton Health Peek discussing the topic of prescription
drug abuse awareness. Prescription drug abuse has become an epidemic in our
country and we’re losing a lot of people to
overdose situations. Sometimes that starts with the initial use of pain management drugs and can progress them with that opiate use into addiction and then the possibility of overdose. Getting that awareness out
there so people understand the risks – one of those risks being a history of either
drug abuse or addiction; could be not to that substance, but to another substance, alcohol for instance. It’s important to let your physician know that that has been a family history or your own history because that is something that that prescriber then can take into consideration when he’s designing your
pain management therapy. There is a drug out now that can reverse actually overdose situations; it’s called naloxone, or narcan is the brand name and that is something that can temporarily revive
that patient until medical assistance can arrive arrive. You need to call 9-1-1 to get medical personnel out there, but in the meantime you can revive that patient so that they can live and hopefully get
some treatment for the future. There are so many things that you can
use other than opiate drugs and some of those can just be as simple as as
Tylenol or acetaminophen, ibuprofen which is Advil or Motrin, some things that are
non pharmaceuticals such as hot pads or cold packs, yoga, exercise, music, art. The other thing that’s very important is realizing that when you have an incident you are probably not going to be able to be pain free with
your therapy, but it should get the pain to a tolerable level and taking
responsibility for that and not demanding to become pain free is going
to go a long ways toward reducing that possibility of abuse developing. So if
you or a loved one is experiencing some difficulties with potentially drug abuse or misuse, or even drugs that are not prescribed and addiction problems you can go to BartonHealth.org and there will be references there that you can use to
hopefully get on the path to success in regaining your life.
