Addictions Awareness Workshop

Addictions Awareness Workshop

HI! My name is Anthony and I work as the Job Developer
here at Nanaimo Youth Services Association. I work within our award winning EMPLOYMENT:
Keep It and BladeRunners programs. The Job Developer works and walks along side
the aspirational young people in our employment training programs, offering assistance in
identifying and clarifying your goals and pursuing job opportunities that are a good
fit for you, along a number of dimensions. In over a decade of doing this type of work,
I have found that if you are reliable, honest, willing to try your best and take responsibility
for yourself, that there is a job out there for almost everyone. Of course, life presents us with obstacles
that are part of the path we must travel upon. Some of these obstacles are external – out
there in the world, and others are inside of us – aspects we can’t or won’t see,
that prevent us from realizing our potential. One of the most pressing internal obstacles
is that of addictive behaviors. The good news is that fewer youth are using
drugs and alcohol these days – a steady decline since the late 90’s. The bad news is that with fentanyl on the
scene, rock bottom and death are a much closer possibility for those who use hard drugs. But addictive behaviours are not just acted
out with alcohol or drugs. In our “Addictions Awareness” workshop,
we look at ourselves through the lenses of biology and evolution and look at our ancient
instincts and the way they manifest in our drives and preferences, needs and wants. We look at motivation and emotion and how
this circuitry needs to be properly engaged to help us find our way through the world. So, check us out at nysa.bc.ca and enquire
about our EMPLOYMENT:KEEP IT and BladeRunners programs and the many other services we
offer as we celebrate our 50th year of helping young people in Nanaimo realize their best
potential.
